Cedar City - one of the best places to retire
CEDAR CITY - In addition to a lower cost of living, there’s a lot to offer in this small, Southern Utah community for folks who might want to retire here.
That’s why “Where to Retire Magazine,” a periodical created to help with tough retirement decisions, chose Cedar City as one of the top five places in the United States to spend your post-career days for the second year in a row.
“It puts us on the map as a great place to visit and a great place to retire, of course,” said Cedar City-Brian Head Tourism Bureau & Visitor Center Director Maria Twitchell.
Many active retirees are attracted to the scenery, recreation and reasonable living prices Utah’s Festival City prides itself on, Twitchell said.
According to a press release, the publication also recognized Crossville, Tenn., Columbia, S.C., Mount Dora, Fla., and Sussex County, Del.
Along with Cedar City, these towns were selected based on what they have to offer and how far your retirement dollar can go.
Larry Baker, Cedar City director of public relations and special projects, said Cedar City is a good choice for retirees who want to stay active and involved.
For those who want to keep learning and growing after retirement, it’s also nice to have access to Southern Utah University, Baker added.
“There’s lots of activities that active adults can take part in,” he said.
“It’s a really good place for somebody who doesn’t want to be really retired from life.”
Twitchell said she talks to people all the time who are interested in Cedar City as their retirement destination.
After deciding to move here, a few retirees volunteer at the Iron County Visitors Center where they share their experiences with other potential residents.
She said she and her husband, Grant, have enjoyed spending time in Cedar City after retiring from their military careers in Texas.
Secrist said the scenery, the people and the university atmosphere are her favorite parts of living here.
“It’s still got the small-town atmosphere, but it’s still got the university,” she said.
